I have a GTX260 and im very happy with the results. Plays UT3 at max. And the heaviest map (serenity with 92 fps).

Sinds everyone is telling their computer specs i'll put mine here too :P:

A 260 is really rockin stuff!

I have a PowerColor X1950PRO Extreme 512MB inside. By a mistake i have a second from this and i think about crossfire. Have one of u experience with a double gfx and the problem called "mikroruckler", a fluctuation in the framerate?

My next one is a X4870. No, not an X2! I didtn own a powerplant...  ;D

The HD4870 is a very good card for every game. In most games it's better than the GTX260 but in UT the GTX260 has the upperhand and i mostly play UT so that why i chose the GTX.

I also had an X1950PRO its a very good card wich also runs UT3 at max at most places. But i never had crossfire in my system so i dont know about that.

Good luck with the purchase of your new card. If you need some help too choose u guys can always ask me for help. I have some good knowlegde of Graphic cards ;).

Only a problem when fps go under 30. If you don't go for the maximum (resolution & grafic effects) you should reach the "green level" with 2 cards /min 50-60 fps.

I would try it if you have 2... but don't know about how many

that's good :P I love hardware too. And anime and more stuff like that... If you have a crossfire motherboard i think you should go for two HD4850's because it is almost evenly priced to the HD4870 but almost double the performance!! So think about it ;)

i think about upgrade my machine with one more couple 1GB/800-RAM from OCZ (Platinum). My WINXP32 can only handle 3,5GB, but i have double channel RAM-Controller and this provides more speed if u plug in a couple of identic RAM. And (i hate 2 say this) in few month i'll change to Vista64, if its stable enough. Want DX10.1...

WinXP is optimal @ 2GB of ram in Dual Channel. If you want a 64bit OS you need ~4GB at least, but ram is inexpensive now^^ But Vista??? OMG.

I want G.E.I.L. too, but my Gigabyte MoBo doesnt work with this shiny orange things.  :-[ So i've changed it into my OCZ Platinum. Why do u think, more than 2GB RAm are not optimal 4 XP? If i start UT3, it takes a lot of my RAM. So maybe it has some advantages 2 have more? Even if i loose a half gig. Its not expensive, like u say.  :D

Vegas, do u have overclocked ur rigs? I can oc the most parts cause my MoBo is prepared (heatpipe allover the chipsets and the elkos), but i only oc my gfx (its hard 4 a X1950PRO to bring much fps with my fullHD-TFT). I cannot say its a big difference, so i want change to 4870.

Dual channel doesn't just mean that you have 2 rigs of ram^^
It's an optimized Hardware handling, but works only with 2 rigs. You can also use two 2GB rigs, but at the time you are best off with 2 fast 1GB rigs. ...But Vista will work better with more than 2 gigas, so just get your further twos.

I think 2 GB ram are necessary to play UT3 without problems.
(Of course everything on high).
My ram usage is around 95% while I play UT3.
Sometimes even around 99% if I forget to close some tabs in firefox and let ICQ run in background as well.
My problem is that my components use many processes (Logitech software, Creative Software, Everest, Fraps etc.)
(Task Manager shows around 40 processes).

I have XP Pro SP3 32 Bit and won't change to Vista.

Nice system.

The cd-key problem often apears if you play offline or with other accounts.
(Do you play via Hamachi?)
If you always login with your account, I don't exactly know where the problem could be...

Are you absolutely sure that your AA works?
Many people have problems to use AA in UT3.
I also did set 4x AA but I did not see any difference.

Have you really seen a difference between AA off and 16QX AA?
What is your gpu?

If I remember right, Wojci has a sweet 8800 GTS. And yes, there is a difference between AA 16/4/off. If you can't notice them as you play, try to make some screenshots and compare them (eg on the bridge on necro).

I have the same graphics card, too and I don't believe the game will still run smoothly.
I remember that I had fps problems when I activated 4x AA (when it worked).
The map was DM-Sanctuary.

Ok, I've checked it right now.
I get around 20 fps if I enable 16xQ AA.

There is a small (don't know if I should call it bug) issue with the forceware drivers.
You have to set it like I did ("Beliebige Anwendungseinstellungen überschreiben")
If you choose the other one, AA could simply not work and your fps may not change because it is still the same.

ok i have max settings in Ut3 and by the nvidia settings i have aa set on 16xQ AA and AF on 16!!!
can i be a reason that my graphic card is 20% overclocked just like my CPU from 2,4Ghz to 3,2Ghz???

Wojcis grafix card is good in shading and AA, but still it costs much performance. Maybe you could try if you are happy also with 4AA, you may get beyond the 100fps and most important nvever below 60 in any circumstances...


In benchmarks my 9600 GT @ 600 MHz is as good as the 8800 GTS 512mb or the Radeon 3850HD. But it can't handle AA, the relative performance drops as soon as AA is activated...
So my 750 MHz, Memory+15%, Shader+30% run best with no AA, I'm still happy with my 1xx-2xx fps  cwl.) .

Try to get at least 60! ...Maybe you could just set your resolution from probably 1680x1050 down to 1400x900 (if your screen has a good interpolation you won't notice that much). ...you end up with 30% less pixles to compute.

I definitely see a difference between our screenshots.
It seems that your AF and AA don't work.
First I would say that you check this 2 things that I've highlighted:

(The 2nd thing with the 1 doesn't have anything to do, but you can make it to test the mouse reaction - reduces mouse lag when V-Sync is on - 0 lets your pc crash if you have WinXP)
The first thing should be set to "Überschreiben" instead of "Erweitern"

Do you have the same forceware driver as me?
I hope you are not one of the victims with a GPU which has problems with AA and AF.
(Happened to some people - also with the GeForce 8800 series)
My old Radeon X1950 XT had big problems with AA.
It was always a big fight to activate it^^ (but the GPU won most times :( )

P.S. You could try it with the menu "Programmeinstellungen" instead of "Globale Einstellungen".
Just look if there is already a UT3 profile and change your values.
If not then create it (but I'm sure UT3.exe will be in the list).

another thing could be that i have the 640mb 8800gts, cause my PC is 2 years old. and i heard that this graphic card has little bugs, which were patched on the 512mb 8800gts

At least UT3 should force it because maximum details in UT3 = 16x AF...

I don't use any stat engine/fps commands.
I just did it to show the less fps and the high input lag, so don't wonder^^
Sometimes I just press F6 (stat net) to see my ping, nothing more.
Stat engine is too much for the screen :D

I REALLY HATE THIS: I change the gfx and get after a minute a bluescreen cuz some fuckin' ati*.* out of no1wantstoknow. Okay, I rebuild my former system and deinstall the driver, shut down, change the gfx again and install the drivers again. As I shut down and reactivate the machine - bluesreen. omfg So I leave in rage my sweet black weapon and ask my brother. He's sysadmin... This night I'll try it again. I heard ATi 4850/4870 cards might have problems with UT3.
But I don't really believe it.
Check your temperatures.
Turn on V-Sync, too.
Reduce graphics details (just for testing).

I own HIS ICEq4 ATi HD 4850 512 mb, got this card when it came out from Overclockers in Stoke, brilliant card, have all settings maxed, with antialiasing and anisteropic filtering and get about a steady 100+FPS

Didn't have enough from my powersupply to run a 4870, so i got the 50 instead.

Would reccomend 48** Range over any Nvidia GTX2** Range from what i have seen and experienced.

hmm, thats sucks! As I read some weeks ago, the google server park has proved the following aspects: The cooling of hdd's isn't so important. If a hdd fails she do it in the first three months. If not, she reach at least the mtbf (mean time between failure).

Infact Lacie has a awesome design, but I prefer a disk from a hdd-vendor like WD. And for the OS I have a backup image, but 4 big data storages u have to use a RAID5 or so and who can pay this...  msnembarr.gif

Some Software overclock brings the same result in this case.
...or a Firmware mod, so there is no need for oc software running in the background.  ;)

Firmware mod is better but riskier and he will lose his warranty.
Software overclock is more secure because if anything happens to the card,
they cannot verify that he overclocked because it's a pure software modification.
I doubt anyhing has changed ;)

I use a Sapphire Radeon 4830 OC'd to 680/1100MHz.
It's a good match for my relatively old rig. I guess I'll buy a new one next christmas though. Probably a 5830 or something similar, depending on the money situation. In any case there's not much point in buying an expensive gpu if my cpu is already a bottleneck.

Unreal Tournament 3 seems to use the CPU a lot, and mine is bottlenecking the system, I get basically same performance with lowest and highest graphical settings, so I keep them maxed for eye candy.  msn011.gif

so im either going to buy the 4870 1GB edition or the Nvidia 260 edition... there both £130...

Take the HD if you want a silent fan. Go for nvidia only if you can manage to find a custom branded, silent cooling system. (the performance of the n260 is better by a little bit, but the cards are practically identical)

ye the 260 may be louder but is much cooler than the 4870... rather cooler and louder than quiter and overheating :D lol...

i think iv made up my mind anyway but ta anyways vegas :P...

going to get the gainward Nvidia 260! :D

I have no problems with UT3 on highest Settings. I'm not sure, in the UTTweaker you can set the FPS, mine is on 160 and I have no problems on serenity.

But my internetconnection still sucks!

i get 60 on my card at the moment... hopefully will get 100 with the nvidia 260... it just seems to jerk sometimes and look shit when things are happening fast... and when alot of people are fighting at once it blurs :S

Thats not possible, with an 8800GT... I get about 80 to far over 100 fps (at high details) with an Nvidia 9600GT oc by 20%.

Try to check if you had frame rate smoothing activated, else you end up with 60fps also with your new card.

omfg, my owl friend! I have my old X1950PRO already and I would send it you 4 free if you want it. I could drive my FullHD-LCD with 35 fps (full details) If you set the resolution down to WXGA (1680x1080) it accelerate to 60 fps etc. And the best: The super silent blower reach only 0.4 Sone (Full Power).

I'm trying out Windows 7 64-bit and UT3 has become totally unplayable. I've got huge fluctuations in fps ranging from 80 to as low as 20 on my 8800gts. Even when the fps are good enough the movement just doesn't feel right.

The strange thing is that I'm playing through good old Bioshock that uses the same engine and it's working without a hiccup. HAWX works great even the buggy Cryostasis is working ok so far, it's just UT3 that has to be problematic again :(

The fps were fine for me with Windows7, even at max settings I had the 60 smoothed frames (didn't remove the smoothing wasted2). There were lodading problems of all kind of files tough (menu and maps).

Was thinking a 4870 but i want to try nVidia for a change. ATi does have problems with UT3 especially, such as frame drops when you are at a teleporter and other crap. I've not had so many problems with my 4850X2 but 2 GPU seem to have problems with other games, so i sell it and get nVidia for a change :)

Turn off the dynamic net speed connection (ingame)
Turn off the v-sync in your graphic driver's settings (i think it will be the problem!)
Search the MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62 row in the UTEngine.ini (...\My Documents\%username%\...) and set it to 150 example. Set it to "false" wont occur the result u want.
If u're making movie with FRAPS than your FPS will be equal with the number of the movie's frame rate.

Only joking, i was ATi fanboy until now - i want to make use of PhysX, CUDA and Ambient Occlusion, only on nVidia ^^

If you read epic forums - too many people have problems with ATi cards and Unreal Engine games (Mostly UT3) but my card had problems with older games like Deus Ex (Unreal Engine 1) and UT99/UT1 Return to na Pali. Even some games like Quake 2 crashed eventually. im not sure if nVidia will provide better for the older games i play (Less crashes) but hopefully it will be more stable for UT3, as nVidia is recommended (For most games i might add)

I just want to try something different, and it looks like, nVidia provides better AA and AF, ATi cards seem to struggle when you turn AA and AF on (4870 Lot less frames compared to the 260 @ 1680x1050/4AA/8AF/Max Settings) But with no AA and no AF - 4870 and 260 are equal, but cost the same anyway.

CUDA -> dead project -> Physx too because of it's not platform independent API. NVidia will suxx with their huge, expensive monolithic chips, lack of the support of the DX10.1 and DX11 ATM, lack of the tesselation (games with DX10.1 and DX11 support will be run much more faster with ATI cards). So the future is the ATI and Larrabee (by Intel) and the software-renderring (UT4 engine will use sw-render too when it will be released...at 2012).

I get a new graphics card on average once a year, so by 2012, i will have what ever is good for the price then. Also, im still on XP - i have no use for DX10/11, i don't like Vista, im waiting for Windows 7.

When windows 7 is released, my PC specs will ge good enough anyway, but i will probably get a DX11 card sometime late next year, maybe i will come back to ATi, but i was really dissapointed in my 4850X2. Anyway, i sell that on friday for £150. ATi are good cards, but nVidia still seem to be a bit ahead.

It boils down to Opinion. Everyone has an opinion, i prefer to see the facts, the FPS, the temperature, the cards size. - Obviously, it will differ dependant on the rest of the system which is why i choose to look at reviews as close to the specification as my PC. It looks like the 260 is just ahead of the 4870 at the same price. Also the one im getting is factory overclocked and has a different cooler than stock. So its a good buy IMO.

I'm sticking with nVidia since the Riva TNT2 and I can't recall any SERIOUS trouble for the past 10 years. A patch or a driver update always fixed the problem. Never had a reason to consider buying an ATi card.

The only thing that pisses me off lately is the insane power consumption of the top cards. I don't know about you guys but I don't own a small portable nuclear plant that I could put somewhere next to my PC. Buying a more powerful PSU with almost every upgrade is really tiresome....

Hehe, sike, I have a 4870 1GB too, but as I buyed the card, the first Toxics wasn't rly good. The second try fulfill the former marks as I heard (very quite, good oc capacability etc.) So my 36cm case fan is even louder them my card blower.  ;D

Toxic is a name for Sapphire OC model, so they're usually better than the non oc cards. Whereas Sapphire is Radeon only, XFX, BFG and EVGA are all old nvidia only brands, though I think they've started to make radeon cards now too.

Radeon 5800 series is due september, and Nvidia is supposed to bring their equivalent a few months later, so it might be a good idea to wait until then. Of course if you're not willing to wait, there are a lot of great offers atm in different price categories. I think UT3 likes Nvidia cards more, but I bet the more powerful cards like 4870/4890 have no trouble playing the game in any case, so the deciding factor should be something else.

I've used both Nvidia and ATI cards, and I do have to say I've had more problems with ATI cards. Usually though Nvidia cards are more expensive than the ATI equivalents here so I'm still more inclined to pick ATI. It's not like Nvidia doesn't have some problems too...

just been reading reviews for hours and found that most people think the GTX 260 216 core edition has better performance over the Radeon 4870 1GB edition... This being as the frame rates are higher on higher resolutions with the GTX 260... but on lower resolutions the 4870 has similar performances... Also checking power consumption which people seem to miss out, the GTX 260 is alot cooler than the 4870 and also isn't as power hungry... also people say ATI are cheaper... but the 1GB 4870 and 260 are £130 lol same price :D

the advantage of the 4870 is that it supports directX 10.1... some people say it doesnt matter at the moment because there arent any 10.1 games out lol... I must point out that the 1GB 4870 did out perform the 192 core 260 until Nvidia made it 216 cores which was a good move to edge the performance once again :P

2004 - Gainward Geforce MX440. I bought this one used for my at the time quite old celeron rig. The MX cards sucked, but it was a huge improvement over the voodoo in terms of perfomance...

2005 - Club3D Radeon 9600XT. This card I bought to a completely new rig, and I must say it was a good card for its price. I still have this card and it's working, but I don't have an agp rig...

2007 - MSI 7600GS. A nice budget card that gave a nice boost to my old rig. I think I bought it for about 130€ and sold it fo 40€

2008 - Sapphire Radeon x1950 pro 512. This is the last AGP card I've bought, I bought it used for 70€ and it sure was a great card. And maybe the best thing about it was that I sold it last february for 75€.  xxxlaugh.gif

My laptop from 2002 has a Nvidia Geforce Go440 - don't ask me. My PowerColor X1950Pro was an Extreme Edition with 512MB VRAM and a Accelero Cooler direct ex factory. At least 60 fps with 1680x1050 and quiet as a whisper (0,4 Sone). My recent is a HIS 4870 1GB.

The fps are not synched to your monitor refresh rate... so 60 or even less fps are not so ideal. And the more frames, the smoother the gameplay, especially when you're turning around fast.

The HD4890 just went down in price, so i buy that instead.

This time round, looks like i stay ATi, just because of the massive price drop, only £10 more than a GTX260 now. Also shorter than a GTX 260 - so will fit in my case easier.

All benchmarks seem to indicate that it runs faster than a GTX 260 anyway.

Hmm, every recent double / multi gfx system has the following problem: Even if the average framerate is very high all tests proofed a fluctuation of the framerate which caused a feeling of a lower framerate and a tenacious gaming. This fluctuation, in German called Mikroruckler (i.e. micro bucking?) devastated especially with mid range gfx the advantage 4 gaming. Even cards with double gfx onboard (X4870X2) has this weakness.

So it would be better to buy a single chip gfx an overclock GPU and VRAM till the next generation of multicore-on-a-die-GPU which should solve the problem. Maybe. btw: Two X4890 could take a lot of power, the system could need 600 Watt or more...

I only have 500W atm but am upgrading. I do not intend to crossfire my 4890, atleast not in the near future.

i found that i need a new power supply in order for my gpu to perform as it should do... need a 550Watt corsair or 650 Watt like you have sike :)... the one I have doesnt have enough juice on the 12V rails so a corsair is best with 40+ amps on the rails

Most probably it depends on the rest of our systems, the graphics card seems to be my limiting factor though. Every bit of oc helps a lot. Try to increase the gpu and shader clocks a bit with the the expertool (direct dl (http://www.gainward.com/support/vga/Setup32_EXPERTool_NV_7_6.zip) / Gainward homepage (http://www.gainward.com)), it runs also if you don't have the Gainward Bliss ed.  wink2.gif

It isn't mine anymore. Someone was in need for an inexpensive graphics card capable to run Starcraft II at high details, a card with a quiet fan.

Silverstone Fortress series also has 90 degree mobo direction, it's very similar to Raven series but with aluminum frame and simpler aesthetics. Personally I preferred the Raven design, FT was just too round. Cooling is superb, temps dropped about 10c compared to my earlier case, and it's still quiet. The design does have a problem with certain passive heatpipe gpus since the hot air tries to go up while the pipes might try to spread heat down.

Here's a better pic with the side panel closed. I could clean the clutter a bit, reroute the cables a bit to make it look more clean if feel like it. I just have a lot of stuff inside so it might look cluttered anyways.  msn011.gif

and that mobo is from the P45 chipset right ? i had a P5Qc and it gave me a lot of problems with the usb ports  :-[ and i couldnt overclock... stupid mobo xD

Nope, it's an AM3 board, asus M4A785TD-V EVO. I'm using a phenom II 955BE@3.6GHz.  afrodd.gif

The sata ports placing could be better, and the cpu cooler retention is bad since basically all aftermarket cpu coolers will end up pointing the wrong way. I might buy a Scythe Mugen II next week to replace the current AC freezer pro, since Mugen allows to place the fan so that it'll blow upwards in my case.

As for the temps, GPU stays under 65c full load, and CPU should stay <60c. This is with fans low, a few degrees lower temps if I change the bottom fans to max. Couple few days it's been close to 30c in my room so it shouldn't get any hotter.  xxxlaugh.gif

i aslo have the scythe mugen 2, its soooo freaking good xD. when it isnt that hot in my room, i get cpu temps of 21c. now its 34c at 3.4 GHz

but dont forget its really huge :P

Just had to replace my Ati HD4890(which was only 1-2 years old) because of the cable of my fan on my graphics card which kept stopping my fan from working(internal).

When browsing the forums I read that this is a common problem with XFX(who knew...) and that you have to open up your graphics card and re-arrange your cable every month after that problem starts occurring!

So I ordered a new one cause I'm not in the mood to open it up every month. Just got in the mail today, my new card is a AMD HD6870 from Saphire. Looks to be a good card, better than my old one  :))).

at 1080p, even if you force anti aliasing in the graphics drivers, you should get something with 3 digits. Blocked fps to 60 or v synch?

what does v-sync do anyway?

V-Sync makes sure your FPS is equal to the refresh rate of your monitor(in most cases refresh rate is 60Hz, so 60 FPS capped).
It's best to turn this off when your fps gets lower then 60 or it will slow your PC way down because it's trying to get back to 60.
This is to prevent screen tearing during gaming(usually happens during cut scenes).

I always turn this off unless I see screen tearing happening(which only happens a few times: GTA IV for example). It's not turned on for me in UT3, never seen screen tearing in UT3 :))).

Wondering if that actually makes a difference, having a higher refreshrate.
With my montitor the max is 60Hz on my resolution(1680x1050).

Also think my fps is a bit too low for the specs I have(I run the game on maximum):
Sapphire AMD HD6870 1GB
AMD Phenom x4 965 @ 3,4GHz
4GB DDR3 1600MHz

The max fps I get is about 100(when looking to the floor it goes up to 150) and I get drops to 40 sometimes :/, I have no fps limit set up in UT3(no limit, no smoothing, no v-sync).

Bad drivers maybe? Maybe the drivers of my old card weren't completely removed and it's causing trouble?

Lol decided to take it to test and lower my settings to the lowest setting possible.
It doesn't change my fps at all, it remains the same in all places, still have the fps drops to 40...

In other word your GPU isn't utilized for 100% 'cos the CPU isn't able to deliver enough workload to the GPU. Therefore your 6870 is just chillin' and hanging around, not doing much work, cuz the CPU can't deliver more.

This can differ depending on the game you're running. Anyway 100-150fps and you're complaining?

I know what bottleneck is, and many people are convinced that it's not bottleneck.
Would be surprised if my CPU wouldn't be able to keep up with my GPU.
Some are saying that there is a component that isn't functioning right and they adviced me to do a memtest, which I'm doing now. So far no errors.

And I'm complaining about the fact that my fps drops to 30-40 fps from time to time(very noticable) and that lowering my settings doesn't solve it. I only get 150 when looking to the floor, otherwise my fps sticks to 60 when it isn't so low.

3.4 is the standard clockspeed of the 965, haven't bothered overlocking it.
And last time I checked, my temps of everything seemed normal.

Okay. Don't know what else could be the reason.

Doing a memtest, but it takes 20 min if not longer.

Hoping I can find the source of the problem because it has been irritating me for some time.
Might just reinstall my PC hoping that will fix the problem tongue1, it has worked before tongue1.

120 Hz does make a difference. Personally I've noticed it most in close quarters when I have to turn a lot, keeps things smoother.  Also 120 Hz monitors have smaller input lag too, or at least my monitor has a zero lag mode. It's a small advantage though, nothing big.

I wouldn't say 100 fps for 6870 and max settings a bad fps, but of course it depends on what game type you're playing. IIRC my fps sinks in 32 player warfare to 40 or so at worst, but in BTA it usually stays 100+ I think I have a cap at 160 atm so don't know how high it would go. And I have a 955BE@3,6Ghz and an unlocked 6950 clocked to 890 Mhz.

I play with my old roaring 4870 1GB and it makes still 60fps on high with full HD, but I guess I haven't AA or such sophisticated things.  embarrassed2

Reinstalling could be a good idea but maybe u can check b4 with a log whats happens while u drop down to 40 fps... Dunno what, but I guess it isn't a hardware problem. Too wide spread from 150 to 40. The only solution beside full install: Check the MoBo-BIOS and his settings or update this.
