I plan to purchase a new IPS (preferably 27-inch) monitor and I was just wondering is any of you guys have this kind of panel. Cuz even after some extensive googling I'm still kinda lost. I'd really appreciate any hints as to which exact model I should pick...

27" is huge for a pc monitor. xxxw00t.gif
The SynchMaster series from Samsung are well-known.
The bigger screen models had some major problems in general, about 5 years ago. I don't know how it is now about the ghosting and the background illumination.

I know that 27" is quite big but since monitor is an accessory that will proly outlive many, many components I'm willing to shell out some extra cash for it. I've looked up the SyncMaster series, but I can't find any that is big enough and is an IPS. My google-fu must be getting weak  Grin

Just a little update. I just got lucky as one of my colleagues bought this H-IPS today and I got the chance to see it running. I'll just save some cash and will most prolly buy it next month.  xxxw00t.gif

Whats the advantage of an IPS panel?

To cut the tech crap out you basically get better image clarity, more vibrant colors, wider viewing angle without those nasty distortions, no contrast shifts that you might get on larger TN panels.

The disadvantage is supposed to be higher response time and tbh I was quite concerned about this until I saw the Dell U2711 live in front of me. It's rated at 6ms GtG but as I said, i didn't notice any ghosting or input lag problems.

Due to your employment at alienware (congrats by the way Azn) I gess the remaining equipment will have no problems to run games at the native screen resolution (2560 x 1440). ...my lcd e.g. sucks at stretching the image for non native resolutions. ...do you also have sennheiser headsets at alienware? TBH I don't deal with peripherals much and I doubt we have Sennheisers there. The thing is that many of the components are simply re-branded as something else. Dell and Alienware monitors are manufactured by Samsung and the Alienware "Tactical" keyboard and mouse looks like it was designed by Logitech...
It's basically the same as for example with mobos - you get all the different brands Gigabyte, Asus, EVGA and in reality all these parts are manufactured in one giant factory owned by Foxxcon in China.

Aye I work there but that doesn't mean I get stuff for free :)) I still wanna build my new desktop by myself.  Cool

I have a 24" screen from Hyundai, but the panel is also from Samsung, but I was looking for a bigger monitor too (don't tell my sweetie!  xxxshifty.gif). It was amazing to see the upscaler working, but my gfx wouldn't manage this resolution with more then 30fps...  msn001.gif

I think, the Dell is a good one, but do u have thinking about 2 or 3 24"-screens? Newer gfx should handle this and you'll could get a huge sightfield.  Crazysmile1

btw: I didnt see such bad effects on my TFT like some tests told. Only the texture effects with ATI-gfx.  msn008.gif

The Dell model is the only 27 IPS-panel with 2560x1440 resolution on the market at the moment. It's also used for the 27" iMac screen.

Personally I have 3x23" 1080p monitors. Or at least soon will, one of them is a 24" model at the moment but I'll replace it with a Dell U2311H so they're all the same size. Eyefinity is great, but there's still some problems with game support, a lot of games don't support eyefinity properly and the fov is screwed like in UT3.

They're in landscape at least for now, I can only pivot one of them. I'm replacing the 24" model now and I'm thinking of buying a pivotable 120Hz monitor at some point so only then can I try it in vertical mode. It just seems to me the central display would be a bit thin in pivot and the bezels quite long, but it would certainly help in the fov department.

This makes me wonder how the rest of your rig looks like  Cool

There's an old pic of my rig in the graphics topic. Actually here's the pic:

Since then I've changed the graphics card to a PowerColor 6950 (unlocked to 6970) and also the cpu cooler is a Scythe Mugen II. Oh and I have 4x2GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM. Otherwise it looks pretty much the same. I might take some new pics when the new monitor arrives next week, now my desk is a bit of a mess.  xxxlaugh.gif
