Since ppl started to speculate about the performance increase of the so called Legoland texture tweak I wanted to know what the effective differences really are. I used low and high resolutions and respective low and high game details and made a screenshot of my fps with fraps. UT3 is patched at 2.1. My system runs with WinXP 32, Core2 Duo E7200 @ stock 2.5GHz, grafic card N9600GT (oc to 750Mhz core) and 4GB ram. I made a test with Win7 pre 64bit too, but forgot about the low details + non-legoland settings.

These are the used Legoland settings in the UTEngine.ini
TEXTUREGROUP_Character=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=16,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_CharacterNormalMap=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=16,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_CharacterSpecular=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=16,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_Effects=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=16,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_LightAndShadowMap=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=8,LODBias=1)
TEXTUREGROUP_RenderTarget=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=16,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_Skybox=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=8,LODBias=2)
TEXTUREGROUP_UI=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=128,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_Vehicle=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=128,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_VehicleNormalMap=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=128,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_VehicleSpecular=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=128,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_Weapon=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=128,LODBias=1)
TEXTUREGROUP_WeaponNormalMap=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=128,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_WeaponSpecular=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=128,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_World=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=8,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_WorldNormalMap=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=8,LODBias=0)
TEXTUREGROUP_WorldSpecular=(MinLODSize=1,MaxLODSize=16,LODBias=0)

Here is an overview in forms of merged screenshots.

1024x786

1280x1024

1440x900

1680x1050

Win7 pre 64bit with DX11 settings at max (except shadows!)

Fazit:

The picmic / Legoland settings have only a very litte effect on the gaming performance, the loading times ain't improved either, since the source Textures are still loaded the same way before any match. Therefore, if you think about using Legoland think twice, it dramaticly reduces the grafic quality without relevant benefits, and its said to be the main cause for eye cancer in the gaming scene since '99.  Azn

Use the setting that best fit your personal preference, thats probably the right choice!

I tried picmip/legoland online and I had less FPS than normal  msn002.gif
Compare the fps, that happens also to me some times. :D

The differences between changing the detail level and activating legoland compared to each other in a table:

  no lego tweak (fps) Legoland (fps) LEGO difference (+-fps)
1024x768 125 126 +1
1024x768 (max details) 109 98 -9
DETAILS difference [fps] 16 28

1280x1024 120 127 +7
1280x1024 (max details) 91 87 -4
DETAILS difference [fps] 29 40

1440x900 123 130 +7
1440x900 (max details) 91 87 -4
DETAILS difference [fps] 32 43

1680x1050 113 113 -
1680x1050 (max details) 72 69 -3
DETAILS difference [fps] 41 44

Win7 64 - 1440x900 not avail 74 -
Win7 64 - 1440x900 (max details) 75 79 (57 without hud!?) +4
DETAILS difference [fps] not avail 4

lol nice research cool thubs up

On my comp the main reason is size of the game. I used to play with full screen 1680*1050 before, with 20-25 fps, but then i realized it's better to play with window mode (i play with 1024*768). I was recording one of my clips for long with on 1024*768, then when i came to full screen wide resolution 1680*1050 i thought that was some game bug or smth, cuz i really couldn't play, it was so uncomfortable...so i swapped to window mode since then :)

nice effort and work vegas, but for sure the things that increase your ut3 performances are others than a bunch of stupid textures. dynamic lights/effects and all the other eye candy kill your fps, not the textures  finger
